Task 1 of the Academic IELTS exam asks you to describe visual information such as a graph, chart, table, or diagram. To perform well, you need more than just basic vocabulary—you need to understand structure, coherence, and data interpretation.

1. Understand the Task

First, know exactly what you’re being asked to do. You must summarise the information, compare data, highlight key features, and identify trends. Avoid giving personal opinions. Your task is to report the information in a clear, formal style.

2. Use a Clear Structure

A good structure is essential for a high score. Divide your response into four paragraphs:

• Introduction: Paraphrase the question.

• Overview: Summarise the main trends or differences.

• Body Paragraph 1 & 2: Present details with data support.

Using linking words such as in contrast, while, however, and similarly will help your ideas flow logically.

3. Improve Your Vocabulary

You should use a variety of vocabulary, especially verbs and adjectives to describe changes (e.g. increase, decline, sharp, gradual). Avoid repeating the same words—this can lower your lexical resource score. Learn synonyms and practise using them in context.

4. Focus on Grammar Accuracy
