How Can You Sound Confident Even When You’re Nervous?

Picture this: You are in an online meeting with colleagues from different countries. Your manager asks for your opinion, and suddenly your heart starts beating faster. You know what you want to say, but your voice sounds uncertain. This happens to many professionals, especially when they are speaking English as an additional language. Nervousness does not reduce the value of a useful contribution or a carefully prepared opinion. Fortunately, you do not need to feel completely calm to sound confident. You need a clear message and a few practical techniques.

Prepare Your Opening

The first sentence is often the hardest. Before a meeting, choose one or two points you want to make. Prepare a simple opening, such as, “I’d like to share an idea about our next step.” Saying your first sentence aloud can make it feel more familiar. By the time the meeting starts, you will have prepared your key points, so you can focus on the discussion rather than searching for every word.

Keep Your Language Clear

Some people try to impress colleagues with long sentences or complicated vocabulary. However, clear language is usually more useful. Instead of saying, “I am not entirely certain whether this proposal might be suitable,” try, “I think this could work, but we should check the costs.” Your message is direct without sounding aggressive.

If you want to get across an important idea, organise it into three parts: your point, your reason and an example. For instance: “I suggest changing the schedule. It would give the team more time. We could start the new plan on Monday.”

Give Yourself Time to Think

A short pause is not a failure. It gives you space to choose your words and allows listeners to follow your ideas. When someone asks a difficult question, you can say, “That’s a good question. Let me think for a moment.”

If you are unsure, avoid guessing. Try, “I don’t have the figures with me, but I can check and send you an answer later.” This sounds responsible because you are being honest and offering a next step.

Practise Your Voice, Not Just Your Words

Speak at a comfortable speed, and pause after important points. On a video call, sit comfortably and look towards the camera when making a key point. You do not need to stare at the screen; natural eye contact is enough. This can also help your audience stay engaged. Recording a one-minute explanation of a work task can help you notice where you rush or become unclear. Listen for the message, not just small grammar mistakes. You can also practise with a trusted colleague before an important presentation.

Confidence Grows Through Experience

Nobody becomes a confident speaker overnight. When you start a new role, it may take time to find your feet. Each meeting gives you another chance to practise. Set yourself a small goal, such as asking one question or sharing one suggestion. After the meeting, write down what worked and what you would improve.

Remember: confidence is not about sounding perfect. It is about speaking clearly, staying honest and making it easier for other people to understand you.

Grammar Notes

Future Perfect Tense

Structure: Subject + will have + past participle (V3)

We use the Future Perfect for actions that will be completed before a specific time in the future.

Example: “By the time the meeting starts, you will have prepared your key points.”

Note: After by the time, use the Present Simple to refer to the future, not will.

Modal Verbs – Can, Could and Should

Modal verbs express ability, possibility and advice.

Can: “I can check and send you an answer later.”

Could: “I think this could work.”

Should: “We should check the costs.”

Rule: Modal verb + base form (e.g. should check, not should to check).

Gerunds – Verb + -ing

Some verbs, such as avoid and suggest, are followed by the -ing form.

Examples:

“Avoid guessing.”

“I suggest changing the schedule.”

Rule: Use avoid doing and suggest doing, not avoid to do or suggest to do.

Imperatives – Giving Advice

Use the base form of a verb to give instructions or advice.

Examples:

“Prepare a simple opening.”

“Speak at a comfortable speed.”

“Set yourself a small goal.”
