When an event suddenly stops without explanation, the brain continues trying to understand it. Psychologists often explain that incomplete situations create mental tension, causing people to repeatedly think about them. As a result, individuals may mentally revisit old memories long after the event itself has ended.

Emotions also play a significant role in this process. Experiences connected to love, disappointment, regret, or hope tend to remain especially powerful.
