Is Multitasking Making You Less Productive?

At first glance, multitasking seems like a clever way to save time. You answer messages while watching a lesson, check your email during a meeting and plan tomorrow’s tasks while eating lunch. It feels efficient because you are always busy. But does doing several things at once actually help you achieve more?

The answer depends on what you are doing. Your brain can manage certain activities together, especially when one of them is familiar and requires little attention. For example, you might comfortably listen to music while tidying your room. However, writing an important email while following a complicated conversation is a different challenge. Both activities compete for your attention.

What we often call multitasking is actually task switching. Instead of focusing fully on two demanding activities, your brain moves rapidly between them. Each change requires a moment to remember where you were and what you need to do next. These small interruptions may seem harmless, but they can add up throughout the day.

Imagine preparing for an English exam. You are reading an article when a notification appears on your phone. You reply, return to the article and then check a new message. By the time you finish, you may have read the same paragraph three times. You have been active, but have you learnt more?

There is also a less obvious cost: mental tiredness. Constantly changing your focus can make even simple tasks feel difficult. When you spread yourself too thin, you may complete several jobs without giving any of them the attention they deserve. Being busy is not always the same as being productive.

Fortunately, improving your concentration does not require a complete change of lifestyle. Start by choosing one priority and planning a short period to work on it. Put your phone out of reach, close unnecessary tabs and let other people know when you need quiet time. If you reduce interruptions, you will probably find it easier to concentrate and get through your work.

You can also organise your day around the type of work you need to do. Group simple activities, such as sorting files or preparing materials, into one session. Save demanding tasks, such as studying grammar or solving problems, for times when you feel most alert. Short breaks will give your mind an opportunity to rest before you begin again.

Of course, nobody can avoid distractions completely. Unexpected messages and urgent requests are part of everyday life. The aim is not to become perfect at concentrating; it is to notice when switching tasks stops being useful. Tomorrow, try working on one important task for twenty minutes without checking your phone. You may be surprised by how much you finish.

Multitasking can sometimes be practical, but it is not a shortcut to better results. If you give important tasks your full attention, you will make fewer unnecessary mistakes and may enjoy your work more. Sometimes, doing one thing well is the most productive choice of all.

Grammar Notes

Simple Future Tense (will + base verb)

We use the Simple Future with will to make predictions, express expectations and describe possible future results.

Structure: Subject + will + base verb

Examples from the article:

“Short breaks will give your mind an opportunity to rest before you begin again.”

“You will probably find it easier to concentrate.”

Remember: The main verb remains in its base form after will.

Correct: You will improve your concentration.

Incorrect: You will improving your concentration.

First Conditional

We use the First Conditional to describe a possible future situation and its likely result.

Structure: If + present simple, will + base verb

Example from the article:

“If you give important tasks your full attention, you will make fewer unnecessary mistakes.”

The if-clause presents the condition, while the will-clause describes the expected result.

Present Simple Tense

We use the Present Simple to describe general facts, habits and situations that are usually true.

Example from the article:

“Both activities compete for your attention.”

Here, compete describes a general fact about activities that demand attention.
