Where Does Real Change Begin: In the Mind or in Action?

Most of us have imagined changing something significant about our lives. We might decide to improve our health, learn a language, develop a new skill, or finally pursue a goal we have postponed for years. At first, the decision itself can feel powerful. We picture a different future and convince ourselves that this time things will be different. Yet a familiar question remains: does real change begin with a new way of thinking, or only when we take action?

The mind certainly plays an essential role. Before people change their behaviour, they usually recognise that something in their current situation needs to be different. Perhaps they have become dissatisfied with an old habit, or they have started questioning a belief that once seemed unquestionable. Someone who has always thought, “I’m simply not good at languages,” might eventually realise that this belief has prevented them from practising consistently. That moment of awareness can open the door to change.

However, recognising the need for change is not the same as changing. We can spend hours planning a healthier lifestyle without exercising once. We can research the best ways to learn English without actually speaking it. Many people decide to make significant changes but struggle to follow through with the actions required to make those changes real. Their intentions may be genuine, but intentions alone rarely transform everyday life.

This is where action becomes crucial. Interestingly, the first action does not need to be dramatic. Ten minutes of exercise, a few pages of a book, or a short conversation in English may seem insignificant. Nevertheless, small actions become powerful when they are repeated. A person who reads for just ten minutes every evening may eventually finish several books without ever making reading feel like an overwhelming task.

Action can also change the way we think about ourselves. Imagine someone who had always believed that they lacked discipline. After they had followed a simple exercise routine for several weeks, they began to see themselves differently. Their behaviour had provided evidence that challenged their old belief. Instead of waiting to feel disciplined before acting, they had developed discipline through action.

This helps explain why motivation alone can be unreliable. People often assume that they must feel completely ready before beginning something difficult. In reality, motivation can grow after we start. Completing one manageable task creates a sense of progress, and that progress can encourage the next action. The hardest part may simply be getting started.

Of course, this does not mean that mindset is irrelevant. Without reflection, we may act without knowing where we are going. Our thoughts help us recognise what matters, question limiting beliefs and choose a direction. Action then turns that direction into experience. In this sense, thought and behaviour are not competitors; they influence each other.

So where does real change begin? Perhaps the clearest answer is that change is conceived in the mind but becomes real through action. A new thought can show us what might be possible, but it cannot transform our lives on its own. Eventually, we have to take the plunge and do something differently.

The first action may appear remarkably small. Yet when it is repeated consistently, that small beginning can become the foundation of something much bigger.

Grammar Notes

Past Perfect Tense

The Past Perfect is formed with:

had + past participle

We use it to describe an action or situation that happened before another event or point in the past.

Example from the article:

“After they had followed a simple exercise routine for several weeks, they began to see themselves differently.”

The exercise routine happened first. The change in how they saw themselves happened afterwards.

Another example:

“By the time she started the course, she had already studied English independently for two years.”

Timeline:

had studied → started the course

The Past Perfect is particularly useful when describing a sequence of past events because it makes clear which event occurred first.
